According to a World Health Organization report, more than two-thirds of Africans might have contracted Covid-19 in the last two years, which was 97 times higher than the number of infections documented.

Owing to the insufficient availability of the testing facility and accessibility among the majority of Africa′s population many infections were not reported. Testing was mostly being done in cases of symptomatic patients in hospitals and travelers who needed negative PCR findings. Experts stated that the inadequate health care facilities and services had overburdened the existing medical facilities.

Several analyses based on the pattern of the pandemic in Africa were made and some concluded that the continent′s youthful population worked as a protective barrier against severe sickness. In Ghana, the WHO study found that the young people residing there were the most infected.

According to the research, laboratory tests have found 11.5 million Covid cases and 252,000 fatalities across Africa. By September last year, an estimated 800 million people might have been infected. The latest data provided by the South African Medical Research Council, stated that the number of deaths could be three times higher than previously recorded. (NDTV, April 08, 2022)
